Fertility Treatments and the HFEA

The HFEA (Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority) is an independant, non-governmental organisation which is responsible for licensing and regulating all Fertility Clinics in the UK, both in relation to treatments being performed, as well as human embryo research.

It also provides a range of detailed information for patients, professionals, the public and the government.

All clinics performing licensible treatments are inspected by the HFEA on an annual basis, and complaints which are not resolved to the patient's satisfaction can be reported to the HFEA for further investigation. Click here to view the HFEA website

Donor Insemination

This treatment is only available privately at Shirley Oaks Hospital, and is offered to Heterosexual couples, Single women and Lesbian couples. We do not recruit our own sperm donors, but purchase in matched donors on an individual basis for each patient. There is no waiting list for treatment, although with the current shortages of donor sperm nationally, we cannot guarantee that this will remain the case. Download information sheet

Ovum (Egg) Donation in conjunction with the IVI Clinic in Spain

This treatment is only available privately at Shirley Oaks Hospital. Egg donors are recruited anonymously in Spain, with no waiting lists for treatment. All scans and blood tests are then performed in the UK at Shirley Oaks, up until the point of embryo transfer, when you will fly to Spain for a second time for this procedure.
