Gynaecology

General gynaecological practice has changed hugely over the years and at all levels, including laboratory investigations, imagining techniques including ultrasound and MRI imagining, the range of medical treatments at our disposal and, probably most of all, in gynaecological surgical practice. There has been a marked decline in open surgery and a big increase in minimal access surgery, both hysteroscopic surgery and laparoscopic surgery. At one time, laparoscopy was used principally as a diagnostic technique but this has now changed to become operative.

I have wide experience of treating nearly all gynaecological conditions and my areas of special interest and expertise include:

  • hysteroscopic and laparoscopic surgery
  • treatment of endometriosis and adhesions
  • myomectomy surgery for uterine fibroids

Medical gynaecological conditions treated include:

  • premature ovarian failure
  • polycystic ovary syndrome
  • menstrual disorders
  • the menopause
  • hormone replacement therapy

I have been closely involved with the use of ultrasound in gynaecology for more than 20 years and have been particularly involved with transvaginal ultrasound scanning since the days of the prototype probes in 1986. I am a Special Skills Trainer for teaching this technique and am recognised as such with the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists. Transvaginal ultrasound forms an integral part of my medical practice.
