Reproductive SurgeryMalformation of the Uterus 21 May 2012
Congenital Malformation of the Uterus and Uterine Septae

The uterus is formed from two tubular structures called the müllerian ducts; these fuse at the lower end to form the uterus, cervix and vagina. Where they don’t fuse higher up, becomes the right and left fallopian tubes. The formation of the uterus is independent from the formation of the ovaries. In male fetuses the müllerian ducts do not persist, instead there are two ducts called the wolffian ducts which go to form the vas deferens and the seminal vesicles. Congenital malformations of the uterus arise where the fusion of the two müllerian ducts does not happen as it should or if one of the müllerian ducts is absent.
