Microsurgical Reversal of Sterilisation

The techniques of tubal microsurgery were pioneered by Dr Victor Gomel in Vancouver in the mid-1970’s. In 1989/90, I was working as a Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist at Singapore General Hospital. Whilst there I undertook a training programme in tubal microsurgery. One of the doctors who taught me is Dr K H Chan, who had been taught by Dr Gomel. There are very few specialists who have the privilege of being taught by such a dedicated team and I believe I am one of only a handful of specialists in Britain who have undertaken such rigourous training. Since I came to Croydon in 1990, I have been carrying out microsurgical reversal of sterilization on a regular basis, using the operating microscope. I am pleased to say that over the years the results have been excellent. As a group, these women are restored to normal fertility. After completing a number of initial investigations, a date for the operation is arranged. The operative technique involves excising the area of scarring in the fallopian tubes and then, using tiny sutures which are barely visible to the naked eye, suturing together the two ends of the fallopian tube to restore the tube to normal patency. These operations are quite time consuming, but well worth the effort.
